Sector

Distribution, luxury goods and CPG

Activity

The customer, a retailer of swimming-pool supplies (pool structure, equipment, maintenance, etc.) with more than 120 stores in France and worldwide, is experiencing buoyant sales and is aiming to open up at least 10 new retail outlets per year. Sales performance monitoring is therefore a strategic priority for this company.

The project at a glance

In order to obtain relevant indicators to better monitor its growth, the customer needed a reliable, scalable data platform that could support end-to-end data management and analytics.

The initial deployment was completed in just four months in order to quickly address this need.

Project objectives

  • Deploy a scalable data platform using the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) environment, pulling together data from a “black box” ERP system all in one place.
  • Populate the data platform with data from the ERP system on a daily basis.
  • Use Business Intelligence and create Power BI dashboards with at least four priority indicators (customer footfall, margin, average spend, sales).

Work performed

A Hardis Group team comprising a data engineer, a data architect, a BI expert, and a project manager performed the following work:

For the data platform:

  • Produced a benchmark comparison to select the best technologies for the project (validation of GCP, SQL Server, and Power BI)
  • Retrieved data from the customer’s ERP system, working with the ERP vendor.
  • Reverse-engineered the data model of the customer’s ERP vendor.
  • Designed and deployed a data warehouse, with daily, delayed population from the ERP system in order to avoid transferring unnecessary data, thereby saving resources.

For Business Intelligence:

  • Identified the indicators required by other functions within the organization (marketing, sales, etc.) in addition to the four priority indicators.
  • Designed dashboards for key users, working with the various functions.
  • Provided monitoring dashboards based on user profiles (data management platform).
  • Trained the key user to design their own dashboards to promote ownership of the new data platform.

Benefits

  • The customer now has a scalable data platform with lower run costs.
  • The first BI project was delivered within four months, covering the four priority indicators, with data populated from the data platform.
  • The customer can now monitor the growth of its retail outlets centrally and make informed decisions about its business development.
